THE TONE OF THE MARTIN 000-18
The Martin 000-18 has a top made of solid sitka spruce. Martin uses spruce as the primary wood species for many tops because of its straight, uniform wood grain, long lifespan and excellent tensile strength. In terms of sound, spruce wood is characterized by a lively tone and optimal sound transmission. The back, sides and neck are made of carefully selected mahogany. Mahogany is relatively lightweight and provides the guitar with a loud sound with an emphasis on clear trebles. Nice looking dark ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge. The combination of these high-quality materials makes the 000-18 one of the clearest sounding Triple-0 guitars in the highs and a warm sounding guitar in the lows. Overall, this Martin can be described as an articulate and dynamic guitar with an impressive tonal quality.
What also affects the tone and quality of the guitar is the bracing. Martin has applied the 'Standard X Scalloped' bracing technology to the 000-18. The bracing is removed in selected places, which reduces the supporting mass. The top remains stable, but can vibrate more freely, improving the tonal quality of the guitar.
