Roland TD-27KV2 Digital Drum Kit

When you buy a TD-27, you will now receive a free DW2000A Kick Pedal. The promotion runs until March 31st and also applies to online purchases, so don't hesitate if you want to take advantage of it. Read more about it here.

The Roland TD-27KV2 is the successor to the successful TD-27KV drum kit. The old TD-27 was loved by enthusiastic hobbyists to professional drummers because of its great playing comfort and unprecedented possibilities. After a number of years of further development, Roland can now implement a number of refinements that further improve the playing experience.

What is new in the TD-27KV2?

There are a number of changes made to the Roland TD-27KV but the one we considered the most important is the hi-hat upgrade. The new version comes with the new 14-inch digital hi-hat, the VH-14D. The digital technology makes the hi-hat even more sensitive, allowing you to create the smallest nuances in your drumming. The 18-inch ride remains as it was, but the two crash cymbals have also been updated. Feedback from the professional scene was often that the Roland cymbals played well but felt too thick. The Japanese company has addressed this and is now releasing both the 12-inch and 14-inch crash in a "thin" version and further improves playability.

The basis of all sounds that can be made on the drum kit is of course the module. This module has had an update that makes more functions available and it has the Prismatic Sound Modeling technology from the flagship, the TD-50. In total there are 75 preset kits that are ready for use, of which 10 new kits have been added that consist entirely of new samples.

Arturia AstroLab Workstation Synthesizer

The Arturia AstroLab is a new workstation from the well-known French company. The AstroLab is a brand new innovative way of creating and generating sounds. Instead of using 1 sound generator that contains many sounds, Arturia goes in a completely different direction. Namely 10 different sound generators, each replicating a different type of instrument! This completely different way of processing sounds makes obtaining the right sounds and settings a lot easier. That's why this Arturia AstroLab is definitely worth trying out!

Total package for a small price

Arturia uses 34 different sound engines. These sound generators are also available for PC or Mac under the name Analog Lab. You read that right: The Arturia AstroLab is a short keyboard with an internal VST. But this is not just any VST: Analog Lab has been seen for many years as the most complete package for analog and acoustic sounds. This package contains a grand piano, Hammond B3 acoustic strings. But also an extensive Yamaha CS-80, Roland Juno-106, Sequential Prophet V, Rhodes MK1 and many other legendary instruments!

These instruments have quite a lot of presets: no less than 1300 in total! You can adjust these presets even further with the 8 rotary and function buttons. There is also a wide range of effects available to enhance the sounds even more.

Hardware

In terms of hardware, the Arturia AstroLab can certainly be called a professional instrument. Thanks to the white steel housing with wooden finish, this instrument is stylish and sturdy! The operation is simple and effective. You control most of the settings of this keyboard with the high-resolution screen that is stylishly processed on the top of the keyboard. As expected, the Arturia has a line output and MIDI, but also a stereo line-in to which you can also connect a vocoder! In total there are 4 connections for different pedals such as sustain and expression. A complete package as we expect from this brand!

Compatibility with computer

Naturally, because the AstroLab uses VSTs, it is also a very user-friendly workstation in combination with a PC or Mac. This is what you get as standard with the Arturia AstroLab Analog Lab Pro: with which you can adjust the presets even more to your taste. This synthesizer can also be expanded considerably with Arturia's sound store. In this digital store you can purchase various sound packages that broaden the horizons of your keyboard even more!

Roland LX-9PW Digital Piano Polished White

The Roland LX-9 is the new flagship model of the LX series of digital pianos. With a beautiful tall cabinet, hybrid keyboard, refreshing design and inspiring sound, this is everything you would expect from a high-end piano. Roland has revamped almost everything about the LX-9, making the playing experience more refined than ever before! The LX-9 comes in Charcoal Black, Polished Ebony and Polished White colours.

Check out our demo of the Roland LX-9 here:

Design

At first glance, the Roland LX-9 has a recognisable design that we have often seen from the Japanese brand. Traditional on its Rolands, the LX-9 has a beautiful tall cabinet no less than 118cm high. The lid at the top can be opened, and the keyboard lid opens and closes on the outside. This makes it one of the few digital pianos that exactly resembles a real upright in size and feel! Still, when we start looking at the details, a lot has changed. For instance, the LX-9 has been given sharper lines for a more modern and fresh look. Also, the buttons are now incorporated under the lacquer, and only light up when you want to operate the piano. This makes the piano look even more real, and provides less distraction while playing. In short: we can definitely call the LX-9 modern and realistic!

Hybrid keyboard and sound

Roland has gone all out with this new LX-9. Perhaps the biggest achievement is the new "hybrid grand keyboard". This new keyboard has an unparalleled feel thanks to Roland's modern design techniques. Thanks to the progressive hammer action, hybrid wood/moulded keys with artificial ivory finish, long key length and unique haptic vibration, this is the most naturalistic keyboard Roland has ever made! In addition, the new high precision sensors provide an ultra-detailed touch that will pick up the smallest refinements of your playing.

For the audio, Roland has also looked at innovation. The new Piano Reality Projection sound system with no less than 8 speakers, is supported by powerful audio components and audio processing techniques that make the sound come across as true to life. Just like hearing a real soundboard! Of course, when it comes to true-to-life sound, the piano sample itself is also very important. That's why Roland has put a new sound generator in the LX-9: the Piano Reality Modelling sound engine. This engine contains a large number of varied grand pianos designed with the most advanced techniques. So you'll always have a piano sound that's right for the piano piece you're playing!

Connectivity and smartphone capabilities

The Roland LX-9 has state-of-the-art ways of connectivity. So of course it comes with 2 headphone jacks, a line-out and an input. But it also has access to USB and bluetooth 5.0! This allows you to very easily connect your phone or tablet to the piano, and enjoy the numerous different apps that can make playing the piano a bit more fun. Roland also has its own app with which you can control and set up the piano, as well as learn theory and play games which is an ideal way for children to learn notes!

In short: The Roland LX-9 is truly one of the most complete digital pianos on the market. With a realistic keyboard, excellent piano sounds, a high-quality design and the latest functions and features makes it the ideal living room/study piano for the discerning player!

Traditionally at its Rolands, the LX-5 has a beautiful high cabinet of no less than 104cm high. The music desk is also neatly incorporated into the cabinet itself. This makes it one of the few digital pianos in its price range that exactly resembles a real upright in size and feel! Still, when we start looking at the details, a lot has changed. For instance, the LX-5 has been given sharper lines for a more modern and fresh look. Also, the buttons are now incorporated under the lacquer, and only light up when you want to operate the piano. This makes the piano look even more real, and ensures less distraction while playing. In short: we can definitely call the LX-5 modern and realistic!

Hybrid keyboard and sound

Roland has gone all out with this new LX-5. They have used the acclaimed PHA-50 keyboard for this model. This keyboard with wooden core and ivory finish has a key length that is almost the same as an acoustic one. This makes the playing experience realistic and comfortable, exactly what a pianist is looking for!

For the audio, Roland has also looked at innovation. The new Piano Reality Projection sound system with 4 speakers, is supported by powerful audio components and audio processing techniques that make the sound come across as true to life. Just like hearing a real soundboard! Of course, when it comes to true-to-life sound, the piano sample itself is also very important. That's why Roland has put a new sound generator in the LX-5: the Piano Reality Modelling sound engine. This engine contains a large number of varied grand pianos designed with the most advanced techniques. So you will always have a piano sound that fits well with the piano piece you are playing.

Connectivity and smartphone capabilities

The Roland LX-5 has state-of-the-art ways of connectivity.

In short: The Roland LX-5 is truly one of the most complete digital pianos on the market. With a realistic keyboard, excellent piano sounds, a high-quality design and the latest functions and features makes it the ideal living room/study piano for the discerning player!

Steinberg Wavelab Pro 12 - Mastering Software

WaveLab is the mastering software you are looking for! Mastering is an important part of music production, but it’s also a completely separate thing to recording and mixing. WaveLab is one of the most popular mastering software on the market. And for good reason; the program contains all the functions you may need. For example, you can master for different purposes, like streaming services, CDs, vinyl, and more. Furthermore, you can process an entire album in the software. The program consists of several handy windows you can minimalize or enlarge based on your preferences. These windows consist of the Tool Window, with which you can manage your project and your files, the Meter Window, with which you can monitor everything, the Batch Processor, with which you can process your files, the Audio Editor, the Audio Montage, and the Master Section.

The program is available in two versions: Elements and Pro. Elements is the more affordable version but is still a complete and reliable program with which you can master beautiful audio, but it has less functions than Pro. As such, Elements has a maximum of five audio tracks whereas Pro has more than a thousand. Additionally, Elements only has eight master section slots whilst Pro has 16. Moreover, with Pro you can playback and process five different audio tracks. This function isn’t part of Elements. Pro also allows more plug-ins and has complete metadata support. Elements does have access to many functions, but often limited access. As opposed to Pro, which has full access to everything.

Steinberg Cubase Pro 14 - DAW Software

Cubase

Cubase is one of the best recording programs in the industry. Cubase is thus increasingly used by professionals. This is because Cubase is a versatile program that works very intuitively. There are technically three different versions of Cubase: ElementsArtist, and Pro. These three versions have different prices and consequently also different functions and plug-ins. Elements is the most affordable version and has thus the least functions and plug-ins, whilst Pro has all the functions and plug-ins. The Artist version falls exactly in between the two. These three versions make Cubase a lot more accessible for beginners because you can already do a lot with just Elements without having to pay hundreds of euros. Do you want to upgrade? No problem, you don’t have to pay the full price of the next program but only the upgrade price.

Pro

Pro is, although quite an investment, the best version of Cubase. You can record different instruments and vocals with so little latency it won’t even be noticeable. Furthermore, all the bars are separated in handy boxes which makes synchronising, cutting, pasting, and dragging a lot easier. Pro also has access to Gain Staging, with which you can alter the gain of individual waves within a single audio recording. The system also has a built-in metronome so you can record your parts whilst staying on beat. Do you dislike the sound of the metronome? No problem, you can choose between different sounds and pitches. Recorded audio is also easy to edit with the added tools (like fades and EQ), effects, and plug-ins. Consequently, you can make the recording as beautiful as possible. Additionally, Steinberg made sure that there are sounds, effects, and plug-ins for every single genre possible. Pro also gives you access to VariAudio 3, which makes it possible to alter the pitch of individual notes of monophonic audio. You can also quantize multiple tracks at the same time and with ARA support editing the audio becomes even easier. With the Project Browser, Track Archives, and Project Import navigating the program will be a lot easier. Pro also gives you access to Audio Alignment, which automatically synchronizes your audio perfectly. This is especially nice if you struggle with latency. Furthermore, you can edit multiple tracks simultaneously with Group Editing. The program can be used with MIDI devices or through an interface. Pro 14 also now has a Score Editor, based on the popular Dorico, with which you can create sheet music within the program. The Score Editor works great with MIDI notes and devices.

The Differences

Although upgrading isn’t more expensive than buying a bigger version, so Elements is still a recommended start, it is important to know what functions and plug-ins Elements doesn’t have that the other versions do. One of the most important differences is that Elements has a limited amount of tracks, with a maximum of 48 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks. For most modern music this is probably sufficient, but if you want to add many instruments or harmonies it can run out quickly. On the other hand, Artist and Pro have an unlimited amount of tracks. Pro and Artist also have access to Gain Staging. With this tool, you can select individual waves within a single audio recording and change the gain easily. Another important difference is that Artist and Pro have more plug-ins, like guitar and bass amps and master tools, than Elements. However, Elements has a relatively large amount of plug-ins which will be sufficient for some. Furthermore, you can buy plug-ins separately and use them with Elements. With Elements you are also limited to 16 groups whereas Artist has a limit of 32 and Pro has a limit of 256. Lastly, Elements simply has the least amount of functions that make recording, mixing, and mastering a lot easier and faster. Functions that Elements doesn’t have include: Workspaces, Advanced Audio Export, Tempo Track, Global Transpose Track, Note Expression, Comping, Group Editing, and many more.

New in Cubase 14

Cubase 14 has some awesome updates. For example, the Pro version now has improved and intuitive new modulators so it has become easier to add more dynamics to your music. Pro and Artist also have improved rhythm machines and editing the rhythm patterns has become easier with the new Pattern Sequencer. Pro and Artist also have new atmosphere plugins, like Interstellar Soundscapes, Autio Filter, and Sonic Playground. A handy and important update is that with Pro and Artist you now have access to Gain Staging, with which you can edit the gain of individual soundwaves within a single audio file. All versions also come with a new score editor, with which you can turn MIDI notes and recordings into sheet music. Moreover, all versions now have an improved mixing panel. They changed the layout to make it easier to see and easier to use. It now also has a drag and drop feature so you can rearrange the channels within the mixing panel. All versions also have the new Underwater plugin with which you can change the atmosphere and space of a recording. Additionally, MediaBay has become more intuitive and previewing audio files has become easier. Furthermore, backup recordings will now be saved in a separate Autio Save folder. Lastly, they also improved the Range Tool, making cutting/pasting/dragging audio files easier and smarter.

Steinberg Cubase Artist 14 - DAW Software

Cubase

Cubase is one of the best recording programs in the industry. Cubase is thus increasingly used by professionals. This is because Cubase is a versatile program that works very intuitively. There are technically three different versions of Cubase: Elements, Artist, and Pro.

Artist

Artist is an amazing program for an amazing price. You can record different instruments and vocals with so little latency it won’t even be noticeable. Furthermore, all the bars are separated in handy boxes which makes synchronising, cutting, pasting, and dragging a lot easier. Artist also has access to Gain Staging, with which you can alter the gain of individual waves within a single audio recording. The system also has a built-in metronome so you can record your parts whilst staying on beat. Do you dislike the sound of the metronome? That is no problem; you can choose between different sounds and pitches. Recorded audio is also easy to edit with the added tools (like fades and EQ), effects, and plug-ins. Consequently, you can make the recording as beautiful as possible. Additionally, Steinberg made sure that there are sounds, effects, and plug-ins for every single genre possible. Artist also gives you access to VariAudio 3, which makes it possible to alter the pitch of individual notes of monophonic audio. You can also quantize multiple tracks at the same time and with ARA support editing the audio becomes even easier. The program can be used with MIDI devices or through an interface. Artist 14 also now has a Score Editor, based on the popular Dorico, with which you can create sheet music within the program.
