THE TONE OF THE MARTIN 000-18

The Martin 000-18 has a top made of solid sitka spruce. Martin uses spruce as the primary wood species for many tops because of its straight, uniform wood grain, long lifespan and excellent tensile strength. In terms of sound, spruce wood is characterized by a lively tone and optimal sound transmission. The back, sides and neck are made of carefully selected mahogany. Mahogany is relatively lightweight and provides the guitar with a loud sound with an emphasis on clear trebles. Nice looking dark ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge. The combination of these high-quality materials makes the 000-18 one of the clearest sounding Triple-0 guitars in the highs and a warm sounding guitar in the lows. Overall, this Martin can be described as an articulate and dynamic guitar with an impressive tonal quality.

What also affects the tone and quality of the guitar is the bracing. Martin has applied the 'Standard X Scalloped' bracing technology to the 000-18. The bracing is removed in selected places, which reduces the supporting mass. The top remains stable, but can vibrate more freely, improving the tonal quality of the guitar.

Martin D-18 - Dreadnought

The Martin D-18 is one of the most legendary western guitars in the world. It was designed in the United States in the 1930s and is currently still made with the same specs. The vintage look and its bright acoustic sound make the D-18 a popular and recognisable guitar that has been used by many legendary musicians in many legendary productions.

The tone of the Martin D-18

The Martin D-18 has a solid spruce top. Martin uses spruce as their primary tonewood for tops due to its straight and uniform grain, its long lifespan and its sturdiness. Spruce also sounds lively and beautiful. The back, sides, and the neck are made of carefully selected mahogany. Mahogany is relatively lightweight and produces a powerful sound with a bright treble. For the freboard and the bridge they have used a beautiful dark ebony. This combination of high-quality materials make the D-18 a dreadnought with beautiful bright highs and warm lows. To summarise: this Martin guitar is dynamic and has a beautiful tonal quality.

Bracing also has a lot of influence on the tone and quality of the guitar. Martin used the ‘Standard X Scalloped’ bracing technique for the D-18. This technique removes the bracing on certain parts to make it easier for the top to vibrate. Consequently, the top will remain stable but can vibrate easier which will improve the tonal quality of the guitar.

The Dreadnought

The Dreadnought is one of the most popular western guitar models in the world. It was originally designed by Martin in 1916. They named the shape after a large British battle ship as the Dreadnought guitar also had a huge body. Over the past century the Dreadnought has become the standard. The Dreadnought sounds full and promotes the bass tones due to the rectangle-esque body shape.

The Martin D-18 includes a luxurious case and will be equipped with Martin’s phosphor bronze strings.

The SC

With the development of the SC guitars Martin mostly looked at the versatility and comfort of electric guitars. The body has a deep cut-out, which makes the neck a lot more easy to play and you can easily reach the highest frets. Furthermore, the neck was specifically developed to make it as ergonomic as that of an electric guitar and makes it easier to go up and down the neck. The SC guitars were also specifically designed to be the ultimate semi-acoustic guitars. The asymmetric body makes sure there will be less feedback and the sound will be fuller and more authentic while amplified. Consequently, the guitar can be used as an electric guitar and will even sound beautiful with a distortion effect. Although it was designed for amplified use, it still sounds beautiful acoustically, making it the ultimate versatile guitar. It’s thus the ideal guitar for electric guitarists who want to play an acoustic guitar, and vice versa.

Materials

The SC-18E is also made of the best materials. The top of the guitar is made of solid spruce which produces a beautifully warm sound. The guitar has solid mahogany back and sides which produces a bright and sharp sound. The combination of spruce and mahogany gives the guitar an authentic warm sound with a great volume. Furthermore, the guitar has an ebony fretboard for a comfortable experience. The guitar will be delivered with a specifically molded hardcase.
